Dear Wesley Families,
I’m excited to welcome you to the 2025-2026 school year! This year marks my seventh as principal of Wesley School and my 19th year in District 4. Our staff and I can’t wait to have our students back in our classrooms and hallways soon. We’re eager to partner with you to support our students’ emotional well-being and academic success throughout the year.
Family involvement has always been an essential part of student achievement at Wesley. As a child’s first teachers and role models, parents play a crucial role. No matter your educational background or the language you speak, you can help your child be prepared and responsible at school. There are many ways to stay connected, including email, Facebook, X, Seesaw, and Parent Square, as well as attending school events whenever you’re able. Please make sure to read the weekly S’more newsletter I send each Friday morning, which can be translated into almost any language. It’s the best way to stay updated on upcoming events and important reminders.
Never hesitate to reach out to me or your child’s teacher with any questions, concerns, or suggestions. It’s also important to stay informed about what your child is learning. Your child’s teacher will keep you updated, but please connect with us if you notice your child struggling or if you’d like ideas for practicing skills at home.
Another key way to support your child’s success is by encouraging good attendance. Students should arrive on time each day and avoid missing school whenever possible. We recommend scheduling vacations during school breaks. Our family liaison and I will continue reaching out to families as needed to help support strong student attendance.
We will continue to place a strong emphasis on academics and student engagement through our School Improvement Plans and staff development efforts. We understand how important it is for students to be both mentally and physically involved in all areas of learning so they stay motivated and make progress. This year, we will keep incorporating Kagan engagement strategies into our lessons to make learning more enjoyable and to create more opportunities for students to participate comfortably.
Additionally, our grade-level teacher teams will place a greater focus on analyzing data and using it to plan and adjust instruction. In math, one of our key goals will be helping students think critically and articulate their reasoning as we roll out the new I-Ready Math program. For literacy, we are concentrating on building strong foundational skills, including explicit phonics instruction at all grade levels and effective strategies for supporting students who are reading below grade level.
I am eager to witness the academic, social, and personal growth our students will achieve during the 2025-2026 school year. Thank you for playing such an important role in Wesley’s learning community. I look forward to another excellent school year ahead!
Sincerely,
Ms. Katie Capiga
